In november 2011 Dutch baritone Robbert Muuse and pianist Micha van Weers have released their new CD: Songs of Quest and Inspiration(Challenge Records) with songs of Cyril Scott (world premiere recordings) and Ralph Vaughan Williams
Program notes:The start of the 20th century brought an era of innovation, both in social aspects as in cultural disciplines. For British musical traditions, this meant the end of the Edwardian era and the romantic idiom, founded on German musical roots. There came a necessity to find the true national colour within British Music.Two young prominent composers Cyril Scott and Ralph Vaughan Williams proved themselves to be men in quest of alternative values to that of late Victorian, Christian and imperial British society. The song groups in this program were developed in 1904 and became important contributions to the song repertoire. That year and the years after meant a change for these British composers. In Paris Cyril Scott met with -the older- Claude Debussy, who taught Scott many new compositional insights, and they developed a good friendship. Also was Scott acquainted with Maurice Ravel, with whom he exchanged musical opinions about modern music in Europe and they played each other their new compositions. The ‘Songs of Travel’ that Ralph Vaughan Williams had composed in 1904/’05 meant his breakthrough into the British music society. A few years later he was introduced to Ravel by Michel Calvocoressi, the poet of the Cinq Mélodies populaires grecques. He studied intensively with Ravel for three months, which brought a profound change of colour to his own compositions. Only a few of Scott’s songs were ever recorded on 33rpm vinyl records. Robbert Muuse and Micha van Weers made 13 world première recordings of his songs on CD. Although there is no record of Cyril Scott and Ralph Vaughan Williams have personally met each other, they were both pioneers for the development of modern British music. |
